The Ethnography Lab was established in February 2017 to promote and explore the boundaries of ethnographic research. Ethnography is the traditional methodology of anthropologists, based in situated participant-observation, mixed qualitative data- collection and non-reductive forms of representation. More recently, it has been popularized in other disciplines, as well as outside the academy, making it a site of increasingly innovative interdisciplinary methodological thinking. The Ethnography Lab gathers the diverse ethnographic expertise at Concordia, to foster creative thinking about methodology, enhance the possibility of new collaborative projects, and to act as a resource for university researchers and people outside of academia who wish to explore cutting-edge ethnography.
The lab is a space of experimentation and for cooking up methodological models and tinkering with existing approaches. It is also a place to foster collegiality and spark thinking across boundaries.
The lab is for students, and for the most part driven by students. As part of this we invite members to submit an idea for a “logo” or “visual identity” that reflects what the lab is about, and who it is about as well.
